In the Trojan War, Ajax was a great warrior and hero. By defeating Achilles, Ajax expects to be awarded Achilles’’ armor, but Odysseus receives this honor instead of Ajax. This causes him to be enraged and attempt to assassinate Odysseus and the Greek commanders Agamemnon and Menelaus. Athena intervenes on his plans by causing him to go mad. Ajax slays sheep, cattle. And a ram believing that he is killing his enemies. Overwhelmed with embarrassment Ajax commits suicide by throwing himself on his own sword. Punishment for his action Agamemnon and Menelaus decree that Ajax’s body remain unburied. This is a huge dishonor. Odysseus convinces the commanders to grant Ajax a proper burial. Through Ajax’s story, Sophocles shows what pride can do to someone’s mental state. He also displays the consequences of acting out of vengeance and the power of the Gods to punish.
